For most people, when New Orleans, Louisiana is mentioned, usually the first thoughts are centered around food, the French Quarter and/or music. To the surprise of most, including myself, the architecture around this city is some of the most beautiful in the world. The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, also known as the St. Louis Cathedral, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans and is the oldest cathedral in the United States. It does not take a trained eye to see that this building is a work of art.

The cathedral is nestled between Jackson Square and the infamous French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The view from the back of the cathedral at night is breathtaking, especially if you are not prepared for it. The lights are strategically placed so the shadow is displayed on the building. It faces down Orleans Street and can be seen from Bourbon Street.

Interior of the cathedral has detail from the floors to the ceiling. Everything is placed where it is for a reason. The flags at the top represent countries that New Orleans has been under from its founding to today on the right. The left side are the Papal flag, the Coat of Arms of the Basilica and the Coat of Arms of the Dioceses of the Metropolitan Province of New Orleans.

Over the alter has the sacrifice of the Lamb of God along with statues representing Faith, Hope and Charity. In addition, there are statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

The entire ceiling is painted with different biblical scenes that include: Nativity of Christ, Jesus telling Peter: “Feed my Sheep” and ten apostles along the sides (minus Peter and Judas)

This Cathedral is worth the stop when visiting New Orleans. The history, architecture and art within is worth every minute spent. The cathedral has a gift shop and a complete guide book for visitors who want to take their experience with them. After touring the cathedral, visitors are encouraged to visit the Old Ursuline Covenant, the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley at 1100 Chartres Street and the adjoining St. Mary’s church. They are both within walking distance of the Cathedral.
