Super Bowl LII is coming to Minneapolis, Minnesota February 4th, 2018 at the Vikings U.S. Bank Stadium. This will be the sixth Super Bowl in a cold weather city. If you are feeling brave and would love to embrace winter as Minnesotans do, here are two free and exceptional experiences worth exploring on Lake Harriet the two weekends prior to the big event.

Art Shanties Project

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekend beginning January 20th till February 11th, 2018. Through rain, sleet, snow, blizzards, and ice since 2005 colorful art structures have appeared on top of iced Lake Harriet. Art houses are located approximately 500 feet offshore on the ice creating a spectacular contrast against the white snow.  This interactive art installation gets even better when you visit them.  You will truly discover the wonder and creativity that go into making these unusual constructions.  Most of them offer programing lead by artists, scientists, and performers. Dress for cold weather; boots, snow pants, coat, hats, mittens, scarf are necessary for the occasion.

If you go:  4135 W. Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55409.

Winter Kite Festival

Saturday, January 27th, 2018, from noon to 4 p.m. you will be able to see different shapes and sizes of kites flying all over the ice.  For this family-friendly outing, colorful kites take the stage at frozen Lake Harriet in uptown Minneapolis.  The event is organized by the Minneapolis Parks Office, offering horse-drawn wagon rides.  You can also experience the enjoyment of ice fishing on the lake as well as snowshoeing. Fire places with marshmallows to roast will be available for when the cold weather starts to settle in and you need a warm, sweet break.

If you go:  4135 W. Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55409.
