The enchanting elegance of sparkling mica-dusted beaches with expansive sunset ocean views is central to the popularity of Coronado, California as a coastal resort destination. The 1906 Lodge is a Four Sisters Inn property conveniently located on Adella Avenue, only two blocks from that stunning beach.

The History Tour

The 1906 Lodge was originally a working class boarding house for construction workers employed at the Hotel del Coronado. The original building offers five second-level guest rooms, the hotel guest services desk, the dining room, common spaces, an underground parking garage, conference rooms, and a business center. The main guest lounge area near the front of the building showcases a mission style brick fireplace with a split chimney. An arched window centered above the mantle is an architectural gem, preserved during renovations. Other decorative leaded glass windows in the original building demonstrate attention to historic preservation.

Guest rooms are decorated with themes of Coronado’s history and named instead of numbered. Each room carries its theme into the décor and lets visitors peek behind the curtains into the history of this storied city. For example, the Author’s Study room includes a typewriter and red slippers to celebrate the work of L. Frank Baum, author of 14 novels in the Oz series and more than 100 other novels and short stories. Baum was a frequent visitor to Coronado Island between 1904 and 1910.

The Modern Tour

Beyond the original building, eleven additional guest rooms surround a lush garden and water fountain display. Award-winning wisteria vines drape in lilac clusters from overhead timbers. Bright red bougainvillea bloom on shrubs throughout the property.

For this visit, I stayed in the annex building. My guest room was named The Plunge, after the Tent City bathhouse which was popular in the heyday of Coronado’s development. Tent City was a collection of tents, rented to bargain shoppers visiting the resort. Tent City featured a salt water pool with diving boards, known as The Plunge. This enclosed pool area provided medicinal relief and was also used to help swimmers adapt to salt water before going into the ocean.

The Plunge guest suite at 1906 Lodge was spacious with a king-sized bed. The room feature artwork and photos depicting the history of the activities of Tent City, along with beach-themed decorations. The room’s windows overlook the courtyard’s lush oasis garden. The large bathroom includes a full shower, a jetted bath tub, extended countertop, luxury robes, and a generous assortment of toiletries.

Amenities

The 1906 Lodge amenities include a business center, wireless access throughout the inn, ice machines, in-room or accessible refrigerators, and convenient underground parking. The guest services desk assists guests with maps for walking tours, biking paths, or access to the local fitness center.

Start your day at the 1906 Lodge with a complimentary breakfast buffet, served fresh from the onsite kitchen. Hot entrees, fresh baked goods, cereals, and fresh fruit are served in the dining room, with access to additional seating outdoors on the courtyard patio. Cookies and small pastries are often available in the dining area throughout the day. Guests are invited to gather in the original historic building for light snacks and wine each afternoon at 5:00 pm.

The 1906 Lodge was designed as a temporary home for workers in the construction industry, but today, this boutique inn brings to mind only luxury and no thoughts of work.
